What’s New And Black On Netflix In September

Next month brings a mix of familiar favorites and new releases to Netflix, with Black talent leading several of the month’s notable arrivals. The lineup reaches back to films audiences may remember from years past while making room for original projects and returning franchises.

Movie fans can revisit Halle Berry’s supernatural thriller Gothika or watch Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key get caught up in an increasingly ridiculous rescue mission in Keanu. Music history gets some attention with Straight Outta Compton, the ensemble biopic chronicling the story of N.W.A. Later in the month, television takes over as Tyler Perry reunites his ensemble for Why Did I Get Married Again? and the streamer welcomes students back to Hillman College with A Different World.

Gothika (9/1)

Halle Berry stars as a criminal psychiatrist who awakens inside the institution where she works with no memory of the murder she is accused of committing. As she searches for answers, a supernatural presence begins to complicate what she believes about the case.

Keanu (9/1)

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele play two cousins who pose as hardened criminals after a stolen kitten leads them into the orbit of a drug gang. Tiffany Haddish and Method Man also appear in the action comedy.

Straight Outta Compton (9/1)

F. Gary Gray traces the rise of N.W.A. from Compton to national fame as the group turns its experiences with policing and life in Los Angeles into music. O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell portray Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E, respectively.

Untold: Mr. T: I Pity the Fool (9/8)

Netflix’s Untold series turns its attention to Mr. T and the story behind his rise from Chicago to international fame. The documentary looks at the experiences behind the larger-than-life persona audiences came to know through television, film and professional wrestling.

Why Did I Get Married Again? (9/9)

Tyler Perry reunites several familiar faces as Marcus and Angela’s daughter prepares to get married. Her wedding brings the longtime group back together and puts their relationships under a new lens years after audiences last saw them.

Cold as Balls: Season 1 (9/20)

Kevin Hart brings his sports interview series to Netflix, joining athletes in ice baths for conversations about their lives and careers. New episodes will arrive regularly following the show’s September debut.

A Different World: Season 1 (9/24)
