DALLAS — New developments have emerged in the investigation into the death of 18-year-old Daniel Erving, as two teenagers who were with him the day he disappeared are now facing evidence tampering charges.

Authorities allege that after Erving drowned in April at Lake Ray Hubbard, east of downtown Dallas, the two individuals failed to report what had happened and instead disposed of his belongings.

According to Dallas police, 19-year-old Lucas Roper and a 16-year-old juvenile have both been charged with tampering with evidence in connection with the investigation.

Body Found Four Days Later

Daniel Erving drowned after jumping from a railway bridge into Lake Ray Hubbard in April, according to investigators.

An autopsy report obtained by CNN states that the two individuals who were with Erving that day "disposed of the decedent's belongings and failed to report the incident to authorities."

Erving's body was not discovered until four days later, on April 17.

Deleted Phone Messages

Court documents also reveal new details about the investigation.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Dallas and Rowlett police interviewed Lucas Roper several days after Erving's body was recovered.

Investigators allege Roper admitted he knew there would be an investigation into Erving's death and told detectives he deleted all cellphone communications between himself and Daniel Erving after the drowning.

Police wrote in the affidavit that Roper said he "did not want to get into trouble."

Roper was interviewed in late April. Court records indicate the arrest warrant was approved July 8, and he was arrested the following day.

While the evidence tampering charges provide new insight into investigators' concerns, authorities have not announced any homicide charges in connection with Daniel Erving's death.
