Nolan Wells Autopsy Explained: What Does "Undetermined" Really Mean?

WNN — The release of the autopsy report in the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells has raised new questions after the medical examiner ruled the manner of death as "undetermined."

But what does that actually mean?

An undetermined ruling does not mean investigators know what happened and simply cannot decide. It means that, based on the available medical evidence alone, the medical examiner could not definitively determine how the death occurred.

In many cases, a medical examiner can identify how a person died—such as by accident, homicide, suicide, or natural causes. When the evidence does not clearly support one conclusion over another, the manner of death may be classified as undetermined.

Importantly, an undetermined ruling does not rule out foul play, nor does it confirm that a crime occurred.

Instead, it means investigators must continue examining the totality of the evidence, including witness statements, digital evidence, forensic analysis, timelines, GPS data, cellphone records, and other investigative findings to determine whether additional facts clarify what happened.

The autopsy is one important piece of the investigation—but it is not the investigation itself.
