Ib Kamara is leaving Off-White, marking the end of his tenure as creative director at the Virgil Abloh-founded fashion house.
News of Kamara’s departure broke Monday, August 31, with the designer and former Dazed editor-in-chief reflecting on his time at Off-White as “an honor and a profound creative education.” Kamara joined the brand’s leadership in 2022, stepping into a pivotal role following Abloh’s death in 2021 and helping guide the house into its next chapter.
“Off-White is bigger than any one idea, exactly as Virgil intended — a house with genuine values, rooted in culture, community, and the belief that fashion can speak to everyone,” Kamara said in a statement to Women’s Wear Daily. “I leave with enormous pride in all we have made, and with nothing but excitement for what this house will continue to become.”
Kamara’s tenure saw him build on Abloh’s legacy while establishing his own visual language at the house, bringing together fashion, music, art, and culture through collections and collaborations. He held fashion shows in NYC for creatives, including the last show which was at the New Design High School in the Lower East Side. Kamara’s design style at Off-White included precise tailoring, streetwear nods and references to his West African heritage.
His departure comes at another significant moment for Off-White as the brand continues to evolve beyond its founder.
The split is understood to be a mutual decision. Following the news, Off-White shared a message thanking Kamara for “these years of vision, creativity, and grace.”
As for what’s next for Kamara, the fashion world will undoubtedly be watching. For now, the designer leaves Off-White with a legacy of his own and a chapter defined by navigating one of fashion’s most consequential transitions.
